There is a resulting wide space above the table, which if may lead readers to think that there is no table in your post.

yeah - this adice is ok - but I'm still having a lot of trouble getting the width of the table right.
At the end of the day it's just HTML - it should bloody work like it says on the tin - something's wrong with the blogger code/programing that doesn't allow simple coding.
